i eat yogurt everyday. of my life.
so, why not make it myself.
and so I found a recipe to make it in that useless piece of kitchenware that is also known as the crockpot.
I despise that crock pot. If i didn't have a whole shelving system in my attic dedicated to kitchenwares to store such treasures as the elusive crockpot, I would yard sale that baby.
but now, the crockpot might redeem itself with it's delicious yogurt making properties.

Of course I start with Cruze Dairy Farm Milk!
HOMEmade Yogurt:
1 gallon of your local dairy farms most minimally pasturized milk.
4 tbsp. of some plain yogurt from the store to use as a starter. (I use brown cow cream top plain yogurt. it is my favorite. you will only need to use store bought the first time and then after that you can use your homemade yogurt as the starter.)
empty your gallon of milk into the crockpot.
turn your crockpot on low.
let it warm for 3 hours with the lid on (i stir it every once in a while just for good measure. and because i am a nervous food stirer this is in no way necessary.)
turn off the crockpot and let it sit with the lid on for 3 hours. (after about 1.5 hours, let the store bought yogurt sit on the counter and become room temp. this just makes it easier to stir in)
after 3 hours, take out 2 cups of the warmed milk and put into a big bowl.
add the 4 tbsp. of store bought yogurt and whisk until completely combined.
add the mixture back into the crockpot and mix very well. lay a heavy towel on top of the lid of the crockpot.
after about 12 hours, uncover and taste. it should be cultured and delicious.
put into glass containers and store in fridge for at least 8 hours before eating. (this makes the texture much thicker.)
and ps. I like to drain all the liquid from the jars after it gets thick. I do not like runny yogurt.
and pps. i like to add in blueberries with a little agave nectar or sugar or even honey when putting it in the jars.
pppps. if you decide to use less milk or half this recipe, you need to lessen the time that it warms up on low. like by about an hour or so.
